Meet the real person of the year
As usual when Time magazine does their Person of the Year one of the runners up is more deserving than the actual winner. Usually they do this for 2 reasons:
- An american winner plays better (and sells more magazines) in the states
- This way when they choose someone controversial they can save some face by claiming “newsworthiness” as a reason
This year Obama was the winner basically for him winning reelection in a hotly contested race and being embroiled in multiple scandals, even though I doubt time will mention the later except maybe in passing.
However let me introduce you to Malala Yousafzal, Time’s runner up. She survived 2 assassination attempts by the Taliban for the “crime” of going to school. She has since become a symbol for the oppression of Women in the Middle East. I encourage everyone to read her story in the linked article and learn what a true Person of the Year is, because Time is far more interested in selling magazines and supporting their liberal ideologies than they are about celebrating a real hero.
